The coalition signing ceremony is on right now, Dion has spoken and now Layton’s speaking.
Wow, Jack is directing some comments to Harper, urging him to accept defeat gracefully.
Holy shit. Holyshitholyshit.
W00T!!!

From Kady liveblogging:
I just realized that the (current) Prime Minister has been largely incidental to the day’s events. That must drive him absolutely bonkers.
Hahahaha. They’re talking about it like it’s already done. Bye Harpie.
It’ll be interesting to see what the Liberals and NDP do to Canada over the next few years. I do know that the $30 billion “stimulus” and the $50 billion tax repeals will quite likely give my son and daughter plenty of debt to pay off when I’m in my grave.
RA – Well, considering Harper spends like a drunken sailor, I don’t think the pocketbooks of future generations are any safer with him in charge.
Besides, there won’t be any $50B corporate tax cut repeal. Maybe in a world where Jack is PM, but not in reality. Stop spreading scare stories.
JJ
Good comeback, actually. Nobody can argue we had a conservative in office during Harper’s rule.
As for my scare stories, it’s not strictly my stories. CTV was reporting earlier today:
http://www.ctvbc.ctv.ca/servlet/an/plocal/CTVNews/20081130/conservative_budget_081201/20081201/?hub=BritishColumbiaHome
“Fife reported earlier Monday that the cabinet formed under the coalition would include both Liberal and NDP ministers. The Liberals would take 18 cabinet seats, while the NDP would get six.
Fife also reported that the coalition government would introduce a $30-billion economic stimulus package and roll back $50 billion in planned corporate tax cuts.”
It appears that the text has since been amended in post-edit to remove the $50 billion in tax cuts. So blame CTV. But if you do a google cache search you can find the old text.
LOL. Anyone who looks at CTV with an eye towards reality based, unbiased reporting is just foolin themselves.
No more corporate welfare. Awwww. Im so….sad. Not.
2FF.
RA – I just saw some guy from the NDP awhile ago (sorry, I can’t remember who it was, some strategist) who said there wasn’t going to be a $50B taxcut repeal. I think they will introduce a stimulus package though. As Harper would have, once he stopped fucking around and started doing business.
Are you at home? Did you see Ezzzz on CTV? What a JERK!!! Garth pwned him
pale – Earlier this afternoon, Duffy looked like he was about to have a coronary. He seems to have calmed down now.
Pale,
Ever since CTV ran that Dion interview, I obviously don’t see them as a source of great repute, no. But I do tend to notice shocking numbers in the news, and I’m very glad there’s no giant tax repeals yet.
JJ,
No I didn’t see anything on TV. I’ll check online though. I don’t have cable so I usually don’t turn on the TV unless it’s to watch CBC.
$30 billion isn’t the end of the world I guess, but it will depend on where it’s spent of course. I have to say, I would have more open to supporting Prime Minister Ignatieff before Dion though, the latter having been resoundingly destroyed in the last election. It’s going to be difficult to say PM Dion, because I just think this is personally like Kim Campbell or Paul Martin before he was elected, inheriting the position rather than really earning it.
RA – Well certainly, even among the Libs they’re putting differences aside (as far as leadership preference) just to get this thing off the ground. Dion has 6 months, I think, then it will probably be Ignatieff. That gives Iggy at least a year to prove himself in this coalition before going into an election.
$30B is really a drop in the bucket if it generates some positive energy in the economy. But I don’t know enough about this shit to speculate as to how and where it should go. No idea.
(BTW, Bob Rae is on, he just confirmed the corporate tax cuts are still a go.)
As you are no doubt aware, I believe repealing tax cuts to corporations in a recession is likely the least effective of all possible moves.
Raphael, worry not. PM Iggy will be along in May.
Hmmm… 24 people in cabinet. 24 pro-choice (I’m expecting)
RA – Although I tend to be against corporate welfare bum-ism, if it means the difference between them making their payroll and not, then I can make an exception
RB – YES!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Bye-bye, Bill C-484 clone.
Pinch me, please! Is this really happening? Does this mean I can actually get more work done that constantly firing off letters to politicians and media, and signing hundreds of petitions?
I am thrilled. This cynic’s heart has just ballooned to the size of Santa’s bag of goodies and toys
I am so looking forward to next Monday! bye-bye Harpie!
CelineStephane Dion is the best person to be PM, as he projects an image of being a take-no-crap kinda guy; a rugged hombre. Who gives a rats patootie whether the peons utterly rejected him during the election? Us progressives know what is best.In these uncertain economic times, Dion’s strategy of implementing a carbon tax – which wowed the public the public during the election – will surely get the economy roaring again.
I trust him, Jack Layton, and Gilles Duceppe, and I am supremely confident that the public trusts them as well!
What’s the matter, cabin fever?
