Senate Reform

Maybe we just misunderstood Harper’s definition of “Senate reform“. It could be that what he meant was “appoint a bunch of ex-Reform Party asslickers to the Senate”.

Jennifer has a list of possible appointees.    (Charles McVety!???!   Say it ain’t so.   Arrrgh!)

Hey, Stevie’s just following the tried-and-true GOP principle of “You shill for my corrupt policies, I’ll give you a plum government assignment that you can use to turn this country into a theocracy.” Must’ve picked it up from his good buddy George.

Incidentally, if Chuckles McDoofus goes to the Senate, who’s going to run the insane asylum known as Word.ca?

Oh, please! Chuckles McDoofus would be
wonderful to render the Senate as crazy
    as his college is.

That would be wonderful for the undoing
of the senate and all the New Democrats
would cheer him on in the endeavour.

Of course, having others like Parson Manning
and Craig Oliver and Mike Duffy in with the
others would add immeasurably to its
    destruction.

By that time Harper would have nowhere else
to go but home to firewalled Alberta.

JAB – Much to our alarm, Steve seems to have picked up quite a few habits from his buddy Georgie. It’s our good fortune to be a stubbornly secular nation so he doesn’t get to throw as many bones to the fundies as Georgie does.

As far as word.ca, I think things like that run themselves after awhile.

Torontonian – I’m not sure that I favour abolishing the Senate, since it allows a sober second thought about legislation that might otherwise just wing its way through. ie. Nobody expected Bill C-484 to get as far as it did — if it had somehow made it any further, the Senate would have killed it. So yeah, it needs some tweaking, but basically I think when it works, it works well. It remains to be seen how radically Harper’s 18 appointments will change it.

Hah — the cpc talking point about this that I heard on the radio this morning was that Harper’s appointees are all in favour of senate reform, so having them in there will expedite the process. Even the talk show host said “Enjoy the Koolaid”

Don’t forget Bill C-10 (film and television censorship). It would have gone through unchanged had it not been halted in the Senate. I believe it was the Senate that defeated a Mulroney era piece of legislation that tried to rollback women’s reproductive rights.

Harper is so despicable that I’m surprised Karl Rove isn’t under consideration. It’s not like laws stop him from breaking them.

Bill C-10 is a perfect example of how the Senate can fix things when our elected officials drop the ball and allow stupid legislation to get rammed through.

I wonder who is under consideration. Nobody too whacko I hope. *cough*McVety
