This is starting to sound weirder. One of the people who discovered the body of Bill Sparkman has gone public with what he saw at the scene:
A part-time census worker found hanging in a rural Kentucky cemetery was naked, gagged and had his hands and feet bound with duct tape, said an Ohio man who discovered the body two weeks ago.
Authorities have also said the word “fed” was scrawled with a felt-tip pen across 51-year-old Bill Sparkman’s chest, but they have released very few details about the case and said investigators have not determined if it was a homicide, suicide or an accident. [...]
Jerry Weaver of Fairfield, Ohio, told The Associated Press on Friday that he was among a group of relatives who made the gruesome discovery on Sept. 12.
“The only thing he had on was a pair of socks,” Weaver said. “And they had duct-taped his hands, his wrists. He had duct tape over his eyes, and they gagged him with a red rag or something.”
“And they even had duct tape around his neck. And they had like his identification tag on his neck. They had it duct-taped to the side of his neck, on the right side, almost on his right shoulder.”
Definitely murder — the “why” remains to be seen, but I’m less convinced than ever that this might have been a drug-related murder.

Cody – Hard to say. It’s certainly looking like this was a ‘message’ killing, and it had something to do with his job. So it’s quite possible that it could have been some far-right whackaloon who’s had his head filled with the scare stories about the census and just went off on this poor guy.
The most frightening thing is that government employees are so hated that this could even be a possibility. If this crime had happened a year ago, we would not be wondering if he could have been killed because of his job.

JJ, I tend to strongly agree that people involved in the drug trade don’t usually like to draw attention to themselves or their operations.
Been thinking about it a bit more and have to consider a couple points.
1) Meth lab operators, meth traffickers and right-wing extremists are not necessarily quite clearly distinct groups. Wasilla, ‘meth capital of Alaska’ comes quickly to mind.
2) Kentucky is a very strong red state and… see point #1.

Yah, as I pointed out to Cody above, there could be some overlap. Take some drug-crazed meth cookers out in the hills… who already hate the government (that area has a long history with independent entrepreneurs and “revenooers”)… and have been listening to all this anti-government propaganda that’s been flying around… they might well feel that their time has finally come, and the rest of the country is finally seeing things their way.
That plot to assassinate Obama is a case in point.

However, as mentioned above, there could be some overlap. A lot of these meth cookers might also be militia types, as per the links that Frank Frink provided to the story about the right-wing extremists who were plotting to kill Obama.
Whatever the details are, there’s no doubt this was done to send some kind of message, and probably an anti-government one. Whether it was because the killers mistook him for an ATF agent or revenuer, or whether they really were all cranked up over the census propaganda propagated by Beck, Bachmann et al, remains to be seen.

It sounds like someone talked their way into Mr. Sparkman’s truck asking for a ride and offering help with his job by giving him referrals and information. With all due respect, this sounds like a bondage scene – Mummification was used, a lot of unnecessary restraining and basically the idea was to humiliate a submissive, kind, gentle, civilized person. But the person abused was a man. The hanging could have been the “breath control” freaky crap that these perverts do, and his feet on the ground mean nothing except that the body’s weight might have brought his feet down.
This was a sick, perverted S & M crime. Going to the nearest city’s bondage clubs, I bet they’d find what they are looking for.
avid reader – I was just about to post something about this, not that there’s been any breakthroughs in the case, but they’re saying now that they’re close to being finished.
Where did you read about mummification? The body was apparently in such bad condition that it couldn’t be restored enough for viewing by the family — the cops told them to just cremate it — but I hadn’t heard anything about mummification.
You really think it was a S&M crime, and nothing to do with the government? In a way, I almost hope so, because that means it’s a one-off.
