The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington said Wednesday that it will be unable to continue the social service programs it runs for the District if the city doesn’t change a proposed same-sex marriage law, a threat that could affect tens of thousands of people the church helps with adoption, homelessness and health care.
Under the bill, headed for a D.C. Council vote next month, religious organizations would not be required to perform or make space available for same-sex weddings. But they would have to obey city laws prohibiting discrimination against gay men and lesbians.
Fearful that they could be forced, among other things, to extend employee benefits to same-sex married couples, church officials said they would have no choice but to abandon their contracts with the city.
What would Jesus think was more important — making sure the poor don’t starve or die of exposure, or making sure that the couple working in the soup kitchen could be discriminated against?

Jasper – According to the church, apparently neither is important. Apparently not letting teh gays get equal rights > not letting the poor starve or die of exposure. Way to pick your battles church.
I think that’s obvious. Jesus didn’t say anything about “homosexual behaviour” when he was alive, even though he no doubt encountered it.
He did however, have a lot of say about our responsibility to care for the poor (St. Matthew 25).
What’s interesting here is that there probably aren’t any gay couples working for the Archdiocese who would access benefits. Religious organizations are ALREADY exempt from anti-discrimination laws and the Roman Catholic Church no doubt has driven them out. So these are creating a false dilemma in their desperation to keep gay couples from having the same benefits and protections that heterosexual couples have.
BTW, banning gay marriage isn’t going to stop homosexual behaviour from occurring. No one is going to choose celibacy because of these bans.
There is no qualifier on “Love thy neighbour as thyself”. Nowhere does it add “Except if they’re female” or “Only if they’re straight.”
The answer lies in Matthew 25: 35,36.

Then again, fundies are exactly the sort of people Jesus was talking about in Matthew 15:8.
There are no surprises waiting for Jasper in heaven because he’s not getting there. He’s embraced evil as a way of life and will burn in hell.
So Jasper will sacrifice people if he doesn’t get his way.

Those people make me sad. It blows my mind that they can read the same book I read and be able to justify this sort of behaviour. What makes them think that they can be so MEAN and be righteous people?! Holding people’s welfare hostage is NEVER okay. How can they not understand that? Why don’t they care?
Even if I believed for a second that God hates homosexuality, I wouldn’t dream of threatening to close down a soup kitchen! I’m relatively sure God isn’t impressed by the way our military (and other militaries) treat prisoners. Should we totally fuck over some other group of people in order to make them stop the mistreatment? Where the hell do they even come up with these ideas?!
“Why don’t they care?”
Because there’s nothing in it for them.
“Caring” is not on their list of things they have to do in order to qualify for whatever they think is waiting for them after they die.
