No rest for the rational

distance-church-state “Theocracy”: I do not think that word means what Tim Bloedow thinks it means:

Canada’s Secular Humanist establishment demands that Secular Humanism be the exclusive philosophy and moral order advanced in Canadian politics and by Canadian schools.

When Christians do this – even when Christians demand far less than this – they are accused of being theocratic.

Mr. “Christian Government” is at it again, making the lame and goofy argument that secularism and atheism are “religions” being forced down the throats of those poor persecuted Christians. Popular as it is with dominionist douchebags, this theory is a steaming load since secular government is by definition the antithesis of theocracy.

From Merriam-Webster online, “Theocracy”:

1 : government of a state by immediate divine guidance or by officials who are regarded as divinely guided

2 : a state governed by a theocracy

“Government of a state by divine guidance” — but Atheism unequivocally rejects “divine guidance”, and a secular state keeps religion and government safely and sanely separated. The expression “humanist theocracy” (or “atheocracy”, as SUZANNE so nitwittedly puts it*) is a contradiction that would only make sense to someone whose logic circuits were rotten with syphilis or fried by religious fanaticism.

Religious people should really be thankful for secular government. While it doesn’t impose the rule of a divine diety that they might like, neither does it prevent anyone from worshiping whatever Spaghetti Monster they choose, something theocracies aren’t generally on board with.

Or maybe protestant fundies have to discover that their contraception would be banned under Catholic rule, and Catholics need to know that they’d be reduced to cracker-worshipping cult status under a fundamentalist “Christian Government”, before they all realize that separation of church and state isn’t a bug, it’s a feature.

*UPDATE: The “atheocracy” comment SUZANNE so nitwittedly posted seems to have gone down the Memory Hole, and no wonder.  But never fear, teh Google Cache is here.

    Very, very well said, JJ!

“Religious people should really be thankful for secular government.”

Just look at you, trying to impose your evil secular form of government on good God-fearing folk…

As for the dictionary definition, well, you can’t trust anything in a book written by atheists. 🙂

The letter in the Advocate (Canadian Politics) was written by a philosophically myopic guy who makes it his business to highlight such issues in the local press without thinking it through. The lack of comments on the letter show that even the locals have given up trying to engage him in dialogue because the truly theocratic already know what is right, their invisible buddy tells them.
The same kind of people recently were up in arms about the illegality of the coalition. Facts and reality have a liberal and/or atheist bias for these folks.

    JJ,

    Bravo!

Ironically it can be asserted that the religious nature of the US is directly related to the separation of church and state placed in their constitution by Thomas Jefferson.

European countries with single, state religions currently have very secular atheist populations (UK, Scandanavia etc).

Besides, Timmy is a Christaliban fascist who knows the only way to scare people is to project his wishes for government on his enemies…of which I am proudly one.

SEPARATION OF RAUNCH AND STATE !

(It’s still legal – and always God-honoring – to air messages like the following. See Ezekiel 3:18-19. In light of government backing of raunchy behavior (such offenders were even executed in early America!), maybe the separation we really need is the “separation of raunch and state”!)

In Luke 17 in the New Testament, Jesus said that one of the big “signs” that will happen shortly before His return to earth as Judge will be a repeat of the “days of Lot” (see Genesis 19 for details). So gays are actually helping to fulfill this same worldwide “sign” (and making the Bible even more believable!) and thus hurrying up the return of the Judge! They are accomplishing what many preachers haven’t accomplished! Gays couldn’t have accomplished this by just coming out of closets into bedrooms. Instead, they invented new architecture – you know, closets opening on to Main Streets where little kids would be able to watch naked men having sex with each other at festivals in places like San Francisco (where their underground saint – San Andreas – may soon get a big jolt out of what’s going on over his head!). Thanks, gays, for figuring out how to bring back our resurrected Saviour even quicker!

[If you would care to learn about the depraved human “pigpen” that regularly occurs in Nancy Pelosi’s district in California, Google “Zombietime” and click on “Up Your Alley Fair” in the left column. And to think – horrors – that she is only two levels away from being President!]

I wonder what they’re saying about this cool new 47-million-year-old dinosaur discovery — probably that it’s a fake, made up by satan-inspired atheists 😛

harebell – There are some pretty good comments with the Advocate letter — like this one:

    Jim,
Every time I read one of your letters, I feel like my head is going to explode. Please stop, for the sake of humanity.

    and this one:

Well Jimbo, at the very least, you are raising the profile of secular humanism, which will invariably draw more people to it, causing the movement to grow.

    and this one:

You’re not a member of the Westboro Baptist Church, are you Mr. Swan?

    Hahahaha!

Jerry – Try not to lose your grip there, Jer. You seem to know an awful lot about gays, their activities, and where you can go online to drool over, oops I mean look disapprovingly at pictures of their street festivals.

    Just sayin’.

Poor Jerry, Jesus is as dead as my great grandmother (if he really ever existed)and is NOT EVER coming back! I for one have a great mistrust for politicians who wear their superstition (religion) on their sleave. If you want to see what it is like when church and state are intertwined, visit Iran!

  16. 16 JJ Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at 6:47 pm

phatbiker – Careful with Jerry there, I think his psyche might be somewhat fragile. Note that he launched straight into “ALL CAPS” mode. They usually have to spend a few sentences working themselves into an ALL CAPS-level frenzy 😉 then it’s hit the caps lock and fly at ‘er.

If you want to see what it is like when church and state are intertwined, visit Iran!

😆 No shit. Jerry would be begging for a secular government after the mullahocracy got ahold of him.

JJ, your comment to Jerry reminded me of this letter to “Annie’s Mailbox I read yesterday.

    http://www.creators.com/lifestylefeatures/annies-mailbox/annie-s-mailbox-r-2009-05-19.html

Dear Annie: I am 23 years old and a virgin. I have never seen a naked man in my life because I believe virginity should be kept until marriage. The other day I went with my sister to watch my nephew’s baseball game. He plays on a field that is uphill, so you can see the backyards of some of the houses across the street. My nephew had heard from his friends that one of the men in those yards sits naked in his hot tub. I always assumed this wasn’t true.

When I got to the game, I instantly remembered those rumors. I didn’t intend to be a Peeping Tom, but I looked around and saw a man in a hot tub. I assumed this was the guy, so I kept watching. Five minutes later, he got out of the hot tub and really was naked. I instantly got a headache and my eyes burned. I want to do something to prevent children from seeing him. I know he was in his own backyard, but you could see him clearly from the field. Would that count as public nudity? Do you think I should report him? — Scarred for Life

RB – 😆 Good one! I wonder if Jerry gets a headache and burning eyes while he pores over the pictures from the “Up Your Alley Fair” (which he’s apparently accessed enough times that he has the directions to the site memorized). Is he too “scarred for life”?? 😉 😛
