Bad ad watch

Easy on the (Photoshop-enhanced) mayo:

So much for “subliminal seduction”, eh?  Good grief, how many kinds of Wrong can you pack into one ad?

When I worked on fast food business in the ad industry, it was standard operating procedure to produce “male and female” versions of ads that featured one person.  I wonder if BK has a sister (or “brother”) ad for this one?   And if not, why not?

The sister ad is probably for a new kind of Burger King taco.

Did I just type that? Not yet 9:00 and my mind is already in the gutter.

    😆 Bad Dr. Prole. 😉

  3. 3 Mike Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 8:01 am

MMM, Burger King for lunch then?

  4. 4 JJ Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 8:21 am

😆 This must be Snarky Commenter Day 😛 In that spirit, I will admit that I wonder if Subway will counterattack these BK sub ads by doing something similar with “Jared”?

  5. 5 deBeauxOs Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 8:31 am

Good grief. That pic looks like it was lifted from the fan pix from the Real Doll™ website (link work place safe.).

  6. 6 Mike Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 8:38 am

Sounds like a Real Doll could be the new toy they give out.

    Completely redefines “Happy Meal”…

ahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!! i’ve been holed up in this motel 6 for over a week and there’s only fast foods around so i’ve been frequenting burger king and subway. bk doesn’t have that ad inside but maybe they’re leaving it for urban papers or something.
yuck, i think i’d walk right out if i saw that poster….besides which if they’re going to go this route at least they could have gay ones 😀

as a joni mitchell song says, ‘sex sells’.

  8. 8 Chimera Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 9:35 am

That’s supposed to be “subliminal?” Pretty blatant, if you ask me.

    I love it! 😆

BTW, is that a real ad? I’m only asking because I consider advertising posters to be visual pollution, and since I can’t clean it up by tearing them down, I pay no attention to them at all. Not a BK fan, either, until now…

  9. 9 sassy Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 10:02 am

I wonder who will be the first to boycott BK based on that ad. (and on what grounds)

  10. 10 Bruce Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 11:01 am

Burger King has been doing a lot of weird advertising lately, it’s starting to look like desperation.

The only thing missing in this ad is mayo shooting out the end of that thing, they’ve gone so far beyond the realm of subtle references that they might as well. If somebody doesn’t Photoshop it in soon, maybe I will.

  11. 11 deBeauxOs Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 11:04 am

lol Bruce, go ahead – I dare you to do that and post it at your blog.

  12. 12 Zorpheous Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 12:57 pm

Have moaning “mmmmm special sauce,…” with a huge mayo shot,… well you know,…

And no, I ain’t going to photoshop that,… even I have standards,… not very high standards, I leave the porn to Dickie Evans

  13. 13 RealityBites Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 1:03 pm

The ad is for Singapore, which explains why no one has seen it here and yes, it’s definitely real:

    http://bon-food.com.sg/promotions/promotions.aspx

It was also not produced by BK’s advertising agency, but by one hired by the local operator.

Proving that all gay men think alike, before I read through all the comments I was set to add:

At least though, they didn’t pile up all the mayo at one end of the sandwich, maybe having it spill over and drip down.

Have moaning “mmmmm special sauce,…” with a huge mayo shot,… well you know,

Well, South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford would know all about that, now wouldn’t he?

  15. 15 Bruce Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 2:23 pm

“Proving that all gay men think alike,”

I hate to admit it, but it’s true.

Newsflash: The Christian Heritage Party is upset that the Cosnervatives are spending $400,000 on Toronto Pride (an event that generates $5 million in GST revenue) instead of… you guessed it… fighting abortion.

Heh. Bonvests also owns Orange Julius and Dairy
Queen in Singapore. Wonder what kind of ads they can come up with for them… 😉

Christian Heritage Party of Canada: ‘Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop … Whining’

Oh look. The theme for Gay Pride can be re-purposed for the CHP.

Seriously. That was one of the things that irritated me about this ad, the woman looks like a blow-up doll.

    re the CHP — “Can’t stop, won’t stop WHINING” 😆 That’s great

    Mike

    Completely redefines “Happy Meal”…

Maybe they could call theirs the “FAP-FAP-FAppy Meal”

  22. 22 JJ Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 6:13 pm

scout – Subway is good 8) It’s the only junk food I will touch. It’s actually pretty healthy, as long as you get a sandwich that has lots of veggies & stuff in it. Remember Jared! He lived on them for months! 😆

  23. 23 JJ Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 6:14 pm

Bruce – Awww, do it! It’d be hilarious!

  24. 24 JJ Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 6:17 pm

Zorph – Standards!? We don’t need no stinkin’ standards!

Glad to see you’re still around commenting. Maybe after a vacation you’ll think about blogging again? (No pressure 😉 ) It happens to all of us… I have been *this* close so many times to just nuking this place.

  25. 25 JJ Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 6:19 pm

Chimera – Zorph is on a blog-cation… who knows what the future will bring, eh? 😉

  26. 26 JJ Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 6:22 pm

RB – Which just goes to show how fucking stupid these people are. Pride brings in umpteen millions of $$$ into the economy — it’s a smart business decision to support it (even if it’s a little hypocritical for the Harper Gov’t). Meanwhile, spending $400,000 on an ad campaign is diddly squat as far as media costs are concerned. It would literally be throwing money away and getting nothing in return.

  27. 27 deBeauxOs Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 7:06 pm

But, but, but, JJ – it’s “public displays of lewd, sexual behaviour” that draw those millions of tourist $$$$$$. Shrieeekkk!!!

  28. 28 Reality Bites Thursday, June 25, 2009 at 2:20 am

Yeah, deBeauxOs, who’d have ever thought that parading fetus porn on Parliament Hill wouldn’t bring in the same kind of dollars as scantily-clad dancers on floats?

  29. 29 JJ Thursday, June 25, 2009 at 2:45 am

RB – 😆 Proving that on top of everything else, fetus fetishists are CHEAP. (Except when they’re giving to support something like taking rights away from their fellow citizens, ie. Prop8.)

  30. 30 deBeauxOs Thursday, June 25, 2009 at 5:42 am

Scantily clad dancers on floats?!?!? We haz that too?

When the CHP whined about “public displays of lewd, sexual behaviour” I thought they meant Jack Layton and Olivia Chow in their tank tops and leather pants.

    😉

  31. 31 RealityBites Thursday, June 25, 2009 at 6:19 am

With Jack’s moustache even a church service looks like a 70s porno. No need for tank tops and leather.

Interesting thought – politicians are more apt to march in the parade when they’re campaigning than when they’re in office. For example, McGuinty marched as opposition leader, John Tory before the election, Rae and Iggy while running for Liberal leader, etc. (Rae, of course still does since he’s the local MP, and all of the above still attend other events for Pride).

So I’m wondering if we’ll see all the Ontario PC leadership candidates this year… Somehow I think not. 😉

  32. 32 Niles Thursday, June 25, 2009 at 12:35 pm

I remember a similar ad in Calgary by some marketing board, for strawberries I think. Same set up for the graphics. Same side profile on the woman, same wide open redlined mouth. Only instead of the burger, it was a strawberry impaled on the end of a fork *just* so, aimed at her mouth. With a luscious drop of water hanging off the pointy end of the strawberry *almost* at her lips.

And I was told I was seeing things and had taken too many advertising analysis classes. This was years ago on a huge billboard atop a building facing a main artery road.

Oh, I’m still around, found myself a nice cozy little corner in the itertoobs where I’m constructing my own personal insane asylum

  34. 34 Zorpheous Thursday, June 25, 2009 at 4:38 pm

    Chimera,

Just got really sick of a lot of the crap in the Blogosphere, need a serious break, need some time to rest,… Just going to lurk around the intertoobs.

    RB

So I’m wondering if we’ll see all the Ontario PC leadership candidates this year… Somehow I think not

Sure, why not? Randy Hillier could be on the Gold, black and rainbow coloured Free Dominion float. What, there is no Free Dominion float? That’s what photoshop was invented for 😉

  36. 36 JJ Friday, June 26, 2009 at 7:57 am

    Niles

And I was told I was seeing things and had taken too many advertising analysis classes.

😆 Imagine how bad it gets when you’ve actually worked in the business for 20 years. (Just ask Bruce, he’s still in it.) I’ve been away from it for over 10 years and I am still fascinated and obsessed with ads, still read Ad Age, Marketing and Creativity (online now though) and still refer to advertising as “The Business” 😛 I checked out but I couldn’t leave…

  37. 37 JJ Friday, June 26, 2009 at 8:02 am

    Zorph

Oh, I’m still around, found myself a nice cozy little corner in the itertoobs where I’m constructing my own personal insane asylum

    That’s good news 8)

Sometimes you just have to walk away from it for awhile and recharge, especially when The Stupid starts to get toxic. I’ve been *this close* to quitting so many times… but instead I just take a break, even if it’s just for a few days, and that seems to work.

Do what you have to, Zorph. But we could sure use your photoshop skills for a picture of the Free Dominion float at the Pride Parade 😉 😛

Wait. What?
