This should be fun

Pres. Obama will be addressing a health care town hall meeting today, in person by the sounds of it, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire:

President Barack Obama will address New Hampshire residents at a town-hall meeting in Portsmouth on Tuesday, taking his health-care reform pitch to a type of forum that has proven volatile in recent days as anger about a proposed overhaul has erupted among some Americans. Obama is scheduled to visit Portsmouth High School at 1 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday, returning to a state he lost to Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary but won handily in the presidential election.

This should be interesting… I just hope the Secret Service is on their toes.

UPDATE: Interesting indeed.  One of the protesters showed up with a gun — apparently, because he could — and a sign that could be construed as threatening (something about “watering the tree of liberty with the blood of tyrants” — from a Thomas Jefferson quote).

Chris Matthews interviewed the bozo on Hardball this aft:

There’s a time and place for guns, but a town hall meeting where half the crowd is going batshit insane obviously isn’t it.  WTF?

I’ll be interested to see if Obama chooses to enact a Bush style of crowd control. Will dissenting t-shirts and bumper stickers keep the right wing fringe types out? And if so, I’m sure we’ll here the wounded baying of idiots “proving” that this is a sign of the totalitarian suppression of the blessed right to yawp like an oaf. So far the Obama reign has, in my own personal opinion, been a bit of a wash. Some of the blame for that falls on the house and senate but there hasn’t been much in the way of hopes fulfilled or dreams realized. Be a nice change to see the leader lead, put his foot down and whip the majorities. But realistically, it is America and there’s just too many hands in too many pockets. The people don’t count for shit when there’s lobbying dollars at stake. Same as it ever was with an extra dollop of sad and a piquant hint of neglectful cruelty all round when it comes to health care.

It is after all the US – yanno, business as usual regardless of who’s in charge.

Well here’s to liberty in America under Obama, the news has some guy with what can only be parsed as a threatening sign standing on the property of a church (praise Jeeziz) just up the street from where Obama will be speaking. Wouldn’t be much of a story if it weren’t for the handgun strapped to his leg. Under l’il Dubya the guy would’ve been cuffed for a “Vote Kerry” bumper sticker.

Funny, that reminds me of a line from GoldenEye:

JAMES BOND: Governments change… the lies stay the same.

Sadly, Obama is starting to fall short of my hopes. If he can’t get health care reform passed and the Rethugs take over in 2010, then the America I was raised to love will truly be dead. At that point, I’ll be looking for other options.

Just heard Obama’s talk through the magic of crooks and liars …. Maybe his plan is full of holes … but my GOD he is a terrific speaker.

I haven’t seen the gun-toting protestor interviewed yet, but if he can manage to get through a five minute tv appearence without directly threating to shoot anyone or swallowing his own tongue, I’ll bet he becomes the gun lobby’s poster child overnight – think of Joe the Plumber, only with a sidearm.

It’s also perfectly legal to chug-a-lug a gallon of hydrochloric acid…

“I’m advocating an armed society, a polite society. That’s all there is to it.” hahahaha I demand a zombie wall, stat! America is nutty.

Sounds like he’s a libertarian, with the ‘armed society is polite society’ shtick. I guess we’ll find out if all people who are armed with lethal missile weapons are rational actors in highly incited emotional situations.

One thing America is, is a well-armed society. I’m not sure I get what point this guy was trying to make. That everyone should be walking around with a sidearm? Maybe way up north, or out in the bush, I could see it, but in town? The open carry combined with the sign alluding to the “blood of tyrants” — no, nobody has any need to worry about this guy 🙄

Niles – Most libertarians are responsible gun owners who would agree that this guy was an idiot for bringing a gun to a presidential event. Just because you *can* doesn’t mean you *should*. I mean, use a little common sense. What a doofus.

  12. 12 J. A. Baker Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at 10:52 am

JJ – That’s exactly the problem. Most of these gun nuts shriiiiieeeeking this nonsense about “An armed society is a polite society” and “The tree of liberty being refreshed by the blood of tyrants” don’t have the common sense God gave a gnat.

  13. 13 JJ Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at 11:09 am

    JAB – Judging by what I’ve seen, I can’t say I disagree.

Don’t you guys have any lefty libertarians down there? Or are they all these conspiracy nuts?

It’s also technically legal to run around an airport with toilet paper tubes and wires strapped to your mid-section…

There are some sane libertarians, but you could pretty much count them on one hand.

Maybe he needed the gun as self-defense against the bat-shit crazy Republicans?

    😉

  17. 17 Dr. Prole Thursday, August 13, 2009 at 11:40 am

I read that in Texas they call a libertarian a “Republican with a bong”.

I read that in Texas they call a libertarian a “Republican with a bong”.

Or as Thom Hartmann frequently opines, “Libertarians are Republicans who want to smoke dope and get laid.”

Wait. What?
