RW militia groups on the rise

In what should come as no surprise to anyone who’s been paying attention to the wingnuttery going on in the states for the last 6 months, the Southern Poverty Law Center is warning that right-wing militia groups are on the rise:

Incensed by the election of the first black US president, right-wing militia groups in the United States are rising again after a decade of decline, said new research on extremist groups released Wednesday.

Ideologically driven by racism and a virulent anti-government, anti-immigrant agenda, the homegrown groups that thrived in the 1990s and spurred numerous deadly terrorist attacks are expanding, said the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).

“This is the most significant growth we’ve seen in 10 to 12 years,” said a law enforcement official quoted by the SPLC in its special report “The Second Wave: Return of the Militias.”

“All it’s lacking is a spark,” said the official, adding it is “only a matter of time before you see threats and violence.”

Considering the overlap between some of these militia groups and anti-abortion extremists, I think it’s safe to say the spark’s arrived.  The only unknown at this point is whether the material it’s touching explodes, lights up briefly or just fizzles.  We’ll see, and probably sooner than later.

After listening to talk radio most of the day yesterday, I think it’s also worth asking at what point do the talk show mouthpieces who spread the paranoia that sends the fearful and uninformed running in the direction of extremism finally say, “Whoa.  Maybe we’ve gone too far.”?

More in the SPLC article.

That report seems more accurate every day.

    rticle here http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20090812/obama_safety_090812/20090812?hub=Politics

mentions these things as well as the astonishing # of death threats Obama receives, and how, if such a murder occurs, there will be a great deal of violence as a result. (even our favourite Alaskan gets a mention)

Rob F – It’s amazing, isn’t it? Almost like it could predict the future.

900 – Thanks for the link.

Yes, it was pretty obvious last fall what group they were pandering to. I was only surprised how little encouragement they needed to come out from under their rocks.

Here’s hoping all goes well and the GOP straightens out before someone gets killed.

Have you tried the Michigan Milita on for size?

    Here they are: http://www.michiganmilitia.com/

Let’s not forget the trail mix types at WWCR
Worldwide Christian Radio. Here’s their program
    guide:

And you don’t even need a shortwave radio any more! Now you can listen online! Unless, of course, you’re holed up in a log cabin in Idaho trying to keep the FBI and ATF at bay.

Then of course you’ll also have your freeze dried supplies and wind up shortwave radio tuned to WWCR.

Torontonian – Aren’t those the guys Michael Moore interviewed in Bowling for Columbine? Timothy McVeigh et al were in with these guys IIRC.

Unless, of course, you’re holed up in a log cabin in Idaho

Or somewhere on rural Vancouver Island 😉

    @JJ

I looked up the film in WikiPedia and there is no mention of Michigan Militia in the film. Moreover, I can’t recall a tie-in to Michigan Militia in the film.

But, of course, the Excited States is filled with these people and it’s easy to imagine one group as being in the film much like McCarthy imagined Reds under most American beds!

I would recommend “Following the money” here…

The Canadian report quotes a guy selling his book as the “Expert” on presidential death threats. This article quotes a report by the SPLC, A group that lives off of donations it receives from people, especially after frightening them.

If you take a moment to look at the SPLC web site… We (The Michigan Militia) are not listed in the “Extremeist” state-by-state listings. That didn’t stop all the news organizations from using our web site photos to pump-up their reports.

Normally, I’d love to bash CNN, But… In this case, They were the ONLY news source to actually contact us for a reaction. Not Fox, Not CBS, Hell, The SPLC didn’t even talk to “Militia Members” before it decided to tell us what we think. Great job, guys. It’s nice to see that the “Politics of division” are behind us.

    Also…

Yes guys, We WERE the unit interviewed for “Bowling for Columbine” We’re in the very beginning of the film. We’ve also been involved with Morgan Spurlock’s 30 Days, Detroit’s Hour Magazine, NPR reports from WKAR, and many other POSITIVE articles.

You don’t have to support or agree with us. Just arm yourselves with the information the media doesn’t report on. And, Remember, We’re here if you need us.
