Humour me

It’s that time of year again… Political Compass time!

In response to a sneering remark made about “socialist authoritarianism” by Our Lady Of The CAPSLOCK, I was compelled to consult the Political Compass to see just who these rabid Socialist Authoritarians really are. Β  And I agree: Socialist Authoritarianism sucks! Just look at some of the deranged fascist creeps in the Upper Left (Socialist Authoritarian) Quadrant:

The Political Compass - Test_1252079451366But enough about the Pope, let’s talk about Me.

************************

I don’t know what kind of trauma befell me between the last time I did this test (about a year ago) and now, but it appears that I’m becoming a…wingnut

policompass1

Libertarian-wise I haven’t changed, but economically I’m usually a couple of squares to the left of that position.Β  I suspect it might have to do with answering some of the questions with an “Agree/Disagree” rather than a “Strongly Agree/Disagree”, so hopefully this isn’t part of some hideous migration to the Dark Side.

But if anyone sees me running around with teabags pinned to my hat, you have my permission in advance to make a Citizen’s Arrest and institutionalize me.

Meanwhile, here’s the test:Β  go for it if you dare, post your results in the comments and I’ll add you to the chart.

Your economic shift slightly to the right might have something to do with the recently-announced-without-consultation-or-warning future HST in BC.

I know I get pissy whenever somebody decides to grab more of my money without compensating me for it in any way…

I appear to be standing near the Dalai Lama. I wonder what we’re discussing, he and I?

    http://www.politicalcompass.org/printablegraph?ec=-3.38&soc=-5.69

I strongly agreed with this question: “Governments should penalise businesses that mislead the public.”

I was looking for a place to add the comment, “…including the bloody government!” But I guess they weren’t looking for more feedback than they were getting, eh?

  3. 3 Dead Men Friday, September 4, 2009 at 1:23 pm

Closer to Nelson Mandela, me. Not the easiest questionnaire to answer – there were some answers that I could have preferred choosing ‘Neutral’ to, but this is close to what I had expected.

Yeah, what the fuck does astrology have to do with politics?

    Anyway, here’s my scores:

    Economic Left/Right: -8.25
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.95

I don’t remember my exact score from the last time I did this, but I did notice a marked shift in the direction of Pol Pot (more commie, more authoritarian). Scary.

  7. 7 Dead Men Friday, September 4, 2009 at 1:48 pm

Maybe the astrology question was there to gauge just how much one tolerates loons in society.

might be the mood or the wording of the questions.

I’m not that far off from last time…

    Bruce – I don’t know what happened! I’m becoming a wingnut πŸ˜₯

I think it’s because I usually answer questions with a “strongly” agree or disagree, and when I took the test this morning I was half asleep and feeling a little ambivalent. The only questions I answered “strongly” were the social issues.

  17. 17 JJ Friday, September 4, 2009 at 6:06 pm

Mike, the Free Marketeer! :lol I wonder if we’ll get anyone else in there… MeaghanWW is in that quad, if she shows up to do the test she can keep you company πŸ˜‰

ETA — I guess that means I’m not turning into a wingnut after all! To really be a wingnut you have to move into the Upper right quadrant, and I am a long way from that.

  18. 18 JJ Friday, September 4, 2009 at 6:10 pm

    Hello JJ [from Ontario vacation],

Thanks for inviting me to this test. I’ve taken it before, but it seems I’ve moved more to the right:

    Economic Left/Right: 3.62
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 1.03

    It’s a fun test.

    Cheers,

By the way, I thought it would be fun to demonstrate where I’m coming from here. I was raised by pinko commie hippies πŸ™‚

    My mother scores:

    Economic Left/Right: -7.38
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.67

Just like you, JJ, I think she expected to be more left but she answered agree/disagree most of the time, and only used “strongly” under very rare circumstances.

RA – Finally, someone for the Right wing authoritarian quadrant. Lonely up there though, eh? I would invite Patrick but he’d probably just start a fight…

That’s good news about your mom — probably it means that my actual result would be a couple of squares to the left, which is reassuring. I was afraid I was going Wingnut.

And speaking of old hippies — Today at work some guy about your age commented on my Pink Floyd pants — he said: “Hey! That’s the design from the Dark Side of the Moon album!” as if he was telling the old lady some Big News that she wouldn’t be aware of πŸ™„ And I said “Noooo! You’re kidding!!!” 😯 then “Get serious, pal, I was AT the Dark Side of the Moon concert in Toronto in ’72.” and he was just shocked 😯 that I’d still be alive, I guess. Ha! All those pharmaceuticals are like preservatives πŸ˜‰

  41. 42 JJ Saturday, September 5, 2009 at 5:31 pm

Not my dog… my dog will fetch no sticks, and she has a constitutional right to crap on every rug she encounters!

  58. 59 JJ Monday, September 7, 2009 at 7:05 pm

    CK – Yer in.

It is an interesting test, but some of the multiple choice statements are worded in a tricky way — ie. the one about gay people adopting kids was worded in such a way that if you weren’t paying attention, you might give the wrong answer. There were a few like that.

New reader here, via the Planet Atheism site.

    My score-Economic Left/Right: -3.25
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.97

I’m usually surprised by how left-leaning these types of things make me out to be economically. I have my few left-leaning views on the environment and health care, but that hardly means that I want the government involved in every transaction on the planet. Where is the nuance?

There is a difference between selling unregulated produce from a backyard garden, or even selling weed on the black market, and say, a group of large corn farmers dumping untold amounts of nitrogen fertilizer runoff into the Gulf of Mexico. When the effects are huge and otherwise unstoppable, then citizens still have a right to petition the government for redress of grievances. In today’s political climate, at least in America, expecting corporations to be held to the same moral standards as regular citizens (even while corporations already have the same, or even more rights) is all it takes to be branded a commie, or a fascist, or a liberal loony, or any number of things.

Wait. What?
