Why? Because it happened in GA, which seems to be in the news quite a lot lately and not for good reasons. BTW, I’ve lived in/near Atlanta all my life and love the place….but not always the people and definitely not most of the cops.

Torontonian – The misdemeanour charges are sick!! I think the prosecutor wants to charge him with aggravated assault, and hopefully the FBI will decide it’s a hate crime. (I don’t see how they couldn’t.)

This is a horrible, horrible story, I almost felt like puking when I read it. I understand that this creep isn’t typical of everyone from Georgia, but wow. This is scary shit. It shook me up 😦
anna – That’s what I said to someone this morning at work, when we were talking about the story. He was incredulous that the charges would only be misdemeanours, and I said “Now imagine if that guy had been black and the woman had been white”. *shakes head*

Anyone remember that movie “A Time to Kill” about a young black girl getting accosted & brutally raped by 2 obviously angry white ‘good ol’ boys’ whom the young girl’s father shot dead at the courthouse. Near the end of the movie, the lawyer for the dad in his summation told the jury to close their eyes & imagine that poor little girl being white & he won. That movie was the first thing that came to mind after reading the story on Pam’s pages.
I feel terrible for that poor little girl & her mom & I hope they do somehow recover.

I’m wondering if there isn’t some kind of dickweed gene that causes ugly hair growth patterns, along with a cluster of other undesirable traits, such as sexism, racism and an inordinate fondness for NASCAR. Guys like him should come with “WARNING: PSYCHO. Do NOT breed” labels attached.
I think the media are obligated to err on the side of caution when it comes to reporting the news. No matter how obvious something seems, it’s always innocent until proven guilty.
Remember when Vince Li chopped off Tim McLean’s head? They still referred to it as an “alleged” crime, despite the fact they had the guy on tape alone in the bus, carrying the head around and eating from it.

Obviously, by law, this scumbag is just a “suspect” until convicted. But when he’s been caught on video pounding the shit out of this woman, it’s kind of hard to say she got all bruised up by falling down the stairs.

Attacks of a racially-motivated nature are always unpleasant. I’ve been on the side of the victim of such attacks as a youth by black youths of extraneous testosterone. Yet I never judged such incidents to be reflective of common behaviour among black youths, nor did it create within me a prejudice that would arouse suspicions and mistrust among blacks. I certainly did not extrapolate political and social causation from the incident.
Similarly in this incident, we may be experiencing less what you call a failure of “post-racial” America, and more the isolated lashing out of a failed human being. A person who resorts to violence and racial pejoratives upon a complete stranger may have more in common with Vince Li than we might otherwise believe. A certain level of inherent mental instability must be present within the individual to react so strongly, and in the presence of children and witnesses.
I disagree with former President Carter that racism is as pronounced as he says, although there’s no denying that it exists within pockets of the United States, and is probably still prevalent in up to 10-15% of the population. And that counts for all sides; racism is not endemic to whites.

Are you sure? I only ask because you seem to entertain some fairly harsh opinions about the multicultural aspect of Canada.
No doubt. My heading was intended to be a bit snarky. I don’t for a second think that this creep is representative of all USians, or even all Georgians(?if that’s what they’re called?) But, it’s there, and it’s kind of horrifying. 10-15% of the population is a large number to hold such virulent views. That’s like one in every seven people 😯 To put it in the context of my own life, that would mean out of the 15 people I work with, 2 of them would be racists? Unacceptable. From any side.
I understand racism isn’t peculiar to whites, but the states (particularly the “south”) does have a history that way — they fought a whole war about it. You have to wonder what these people who say things like “the south will rise again” and fly that fucking confederate flag are thinking 😯

Funny thing, RA, you’re such an expert in racism in the US and know more than a former president about it but 1) you don’t live there; and 2) you’re white. It doesn’t just exist in “pockets” of the US, it’s in the whole pair of pants, trust me. And it’s not just about being called a nigger while you get the shit beat out of you by Bubba.

This made me want to die. I’m sure all the people of colour in the US who have been subjected to racism of one form or another (hint: probably pretty much all of them) will be so happy to hear that they were just dreaming it – and that they’re racist, too! Thank goodness the white man is here to set everyone straight.
