A good old-time book burning

Light ’em if ya got ’em… books, that is.burningbook

The congregation of a Baptist church in North Carolina is getting their Zippos unsheathed, fueled up and ready to deploy as they prepare for good old-fashioned combustible fun at their upcoming Hallowe’en Book Burning:

A Baptist Church near Asheville, N.C., is hosting a “Halloween book burning” to purge the area of “Satan’s” works, which include all non-King James versions of the Bible, popular books by many religious authors and even country music.  […]

Church leaders deem Good News for Modern Man, the Evidence Bible, the New International Version Bible, the Green Bible and the Message Bible, as well as at least seven other versions of the Bible as “Satan’s Bibles,” according to the website. Attendees will also set fire to “Satan’s popular books” such as the work of “heretics” including the Pope, Mother Teresa, Billy Graham and Rick Warren.

We already know the Religious Reich hates Darwin’s “On The Origin of Species” with the red-hot intensity of molten pig iron, but if they even feel non-KJ versions of the Bible are Satan’s Works and suitable for burning, wow.  That doesn’t leave a lot of choice in reading material, and certainly eliminates anything that might actually inform and improve one’s mind.

Explains a lot, doesn’t it?

The KJV – apparently, if it was good enough for Jesus, it’s good enough for them!

Amazing to think that Jesus recommended the KJV.
    That would be hucksterism.

If anything, they should be burning the New King
James Version. It was developed by Thomas Nelson
& Sons and is not a work of scholarship. Yet,
many evangelicals use it daily–probably because
it’s easier to read and understand.

    When you’re home schooled, everything’s a lot
    harder to learn.

I’d love to see the writings of Hannity, Limbaugh
and others like O’Reilly be thrown on the pyre.

Don’t anyone tell them about the lego Bible scenes on the internet!

Shouldn’t these morans wait for Andrew Schlafly to edit the Bible to be conservatively correct?

Funniest thing I’ve read all month. I wonder if they’d write the original texts of the books of the bible, seeing as how they are not the KJV of the bible.

    Good morrow, all!
Book-burnings…hmmm…why does that sound so familiar?
Let’s see if teh interwebs says something…
From Wikipedia (not an unimpeachable source, but well-written, nonetheless):
“Some particular cases of book burning are long and traumatically remembered – because the books destroyed were irreplaceable and their loss constituted a severe damage to cultural heritage, and/or because this instance of book burning has become emblematic of a harsh and oppressive regime. Such were the destruction of the Library of Alexandria, the burning of books and burying of scholars under China’s Qin Dynasty, the destruction of Mayan codices by Spanish conquistadors and priests, and in more recent times, Nazi book burnings and the destruction of the Sarajevo National Library”
Marvelous historical company these people seek to keep. Apparently, brain damage is a communicable disease.
