Oy

The barking mad and burning stupid strikes again:

Two South Carolina County Republican Party chairmen stepped up to rebut criticism of Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) in a newspaper editorial Sunday. But their defense of the senator might be overshadowed by their use of an anti-Semitic stereotype to praise him.

After a Democratic state senator wrote in The State that DeMint didn’t bring enough money back home, Bamberg County GOP Chairman Edwin Merwin and Orangeburg County GOP Chairman James Ulmer responded that he was just looking after the nation’s pennies — like a Jew would.

It takes a special kind of cognitive dissonance to be so kneejerk in the defense of Israel that even the mildest and most reasonable criticism of Israeli government policy is considered “antisemitism”,  and yet be perfectly comfortable with remarks that play into the most vile antisemitic stereotypes.
And these meshugeneh shmucks wonder why they have so much trouble attracting Jewish voters?

Yeah, it’s kinda like that woman who shouted “Heil Hitler” at the Israeli Jew at that anti-health care rally.

“Heil Hitler” Lady – the true face of the GOP.

    Good morrow, all!
Obviously, not enough irony in their diet.

I believe that the Religious Wrong’s “support” for Israel is by and large anti-Semitic. You see, they support Israel because they want the world to end. They support Israel so that the Temple can be rebuilt and all the Jews can go there so that the second coming can happen. That’s why they support Israel. They are (trying to) use the country as a means to an end, not due to genuine support for that country. In their vision, all Jews die or convert. That’s why the RW’s support for Israel is anti-Semitic. People have all sorts of reasons for their positions on the Middle East conflict, but God shouldn’t be one of them. If there is to be any hope of a resolution there, God has to be out of it.

Also, I wonder if the RW realizes their strange bedfellow: Ahmadinejad, who, when he ran Tehran, spent millions trying to make the city more hospitable for the Mahdi, a messiah-like figure in Shia Islam. For both the RW and Ahmadinejad, wouldn’t their actions be sacriligeous? Shouldn’t God/Allah be allowed to decide when the world ends?

    Nuttery sure breeds strange bedfellows.

Rob, you’re not the first to posit this theory, and you probably won’t be the last. And you’re right: the entire raison d’être of these fundie nutbags is to accelerate the occurance of the rapture. This is just the latest data point.

    Call it “Operation Apocalypse Now.”

JAB – OMG, that woman was so unbelievably ignorant. They really don’t get it. They seem to think they can’t possibly be antisemitic as long as they support Israel bombing the shit out of Palestine.

Cornelius – All the chopped liver in Brooklyn wouldn’t be enough to raise their irony levels to the point where they’re aware of their own foolishness.

Rob F – It’s very true that there’s a lot of self-interest in the religious right’s support for Israel.

Christian Zionists, a subset of fundies, believe that Israel has to exist in order for armageddon to happen and then the rapture. According to them, Jews will either convert to Christianity or perish and go to hell with the rest of us. So their “support” for Israel is somewhat compromised at best.

    Nuttery sure breeds strange bedfellows.

    That’s for damn sure.

Wait. What?
