Guess who’s back! Doug Hoffman, the teabagger candidate with the cheap suit, $6 born-again haircut, teeth like a chainsmoking quarterhorse and eyes of a child molester, has re-emerged to revoke his concession, claiming that the NY-23 election was stolen by…
In a new letter to his supporters, Hoffman boasts of how the margin in the race has narrowed as the counties have corrected clerical errors in the totals — which happen routinely in every election, as local officials have said — and absentee ballots are counted. Hoffman says the situation is an obvious ACORN conspiracy:
I’m sure you are as dismayed as I am to learn of the mischief that took place in Oswego and neighboring counties. We know this would not be the first time for the ACORN faithful to tamper with democracy.
Oswego County elections officials blame the mistakes on “chaos” in their call-in center that included a phone system foul-up, and on inspectors who read numbers incorrectly when phoning in results. This sounds like a tactic right from the ACORN playbook.
With about 4,000 absentee ballots to be counted, Hoffman still trails by 2,800 votes. Although this means he’d have the impossible task of winning about 87% of the remaining votes in order to eke out a narrow victory, Hoffman’s not letting this get him down. Because, to make matters even more fucked up, today a local newspaper is reporting that there was a virus in the voting machines.
The computerized voting machines used by many voters in the 23rd district had a computer virus – tainting the results, not just from those machines known to have been infected, but casting doubt on the accuracy of counts retrieved from any of the machines.
Cathleen Rogers, the Democratic Elections Commissioner in Hamilton County stated that they discovered a problem with their voting machines the week prior to the election and that the “virus” was fixed by a Technical Support representative from Dominion, the manufacturer. The Dominion/Sequoia Voting Systems representative “reprogrammed” their machines in time for them to use in the Nov. 3rd Special Election. None of the machines (from the same manufacturer) used in the other counties within the 23rd district were looked at nor were they recertified after the “reprogramming” that occurred in Hamilton County.
To add another twist that may or may not have anything to do with this story, the “Dominion/Sequoia Voting Systems” company is owned by religious crackpot Howard Ahmanson, a Christian reconstructionist, major funder of that bastion of “intelligent design”, the Discovery Institute, fervent Bush supporter and one of those rich theocrats who work behind the scenes to get *their* candidates elected. Does he ever sound like a piece of work:
Ahmanson is also one of the bagmen behind the extremist “Christian Reconstructionist” movement, which openly advocates a theocratic takeover of American democracy, placing the entire society under the “dominion” of “Christ the King.” This “dominion” includes the death penalty for homosexuals, exclusion of citizenship for non-Christians, stoning of sinners and – we kid you not – slavery, “one of the most beneficent of Biblical laws.”
Just the kind of guy you want in charge of your voting systems.
Whether this has anything to do with the results of NY-23 remains to be seen, but the saga clearly hasn’t ended yet. Fortunately my popcorn machine doesn’t have a virus.
