In yer faces, Conference of Catholic Bishops

Good news in US healthcare reform:  the Nelson Amendment, which used the same language as the Stupak Amendment to restrict abortion availability even to women paying for it with their own money, was rejected by the Senate today:

The Senate narrowly rejected an amendment that would have restricted abortion coverage in the pending health-care bill, leaving in question whether Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) has the 60 votes needed to move the bill toward final passage.

The measure, which failed 54-45, addressed the scope of restrictions on coverage of abortion services for people who receive subsidies to buy insurance. The outcome was expected, but could cost the support of Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.), who has threatened to filibuster the $848 billion bill unless abortion restrictions are tightened.

The introduction of the amendment was held up on Friday because — get ready for it — because — and I’m not kidding — because the Conference of Catholic Bishops needed more time to review it before giving it their okay.

Are the Catholic Bishops elected officials?  Are they gynecologists?  Why are they  involved in womens’ healthcare policymaking?  Un-freaking-believable!

Remind me again why the Catholic Church is tax-exempt?

UPDATE: What?  No public option?

They’re tax exempt because they have political friends in very high places. Always have.

Yes! The teabaggers are celebrating, the right is popping the corks on their champagne bottles! Now all those people with no money can continue to suffer and die or go into an endless bankruptcy cycle because that is the way Murka works! Freedom to suffer and die or to lose your home, your choice!

FUCK do I hate these people.

smelter rat – Time for their friends to disown them. Friends don’t let friends force them to make legislation like theocrats.

Antisocial – Yeah, I just watched Olby and Kos was on & pretty pissed off. I’m always glad to be living in Canada, but especially when I read about things like this. It’s very depressing.

They are apparently extending medicare to people age 55-65 — it’s a start but whoop de doo. That means the gov’t gets to insure the people who are most likely to get sick, and the insurance companies get the young & healthy ones who pay in but don’t take anything out. And most of those millions of people who don’t have healthcare still won’t have healthcare. Medical bankruptcies will continue apace… YAY!

I’m with you, sometimes I loathe those people with the white-hot intensity of molten steel.

Can I move to Canada please?

Come on up! Your universal healthcare is waiting!

Come on up! Your universal healthcare is waiting!

Well, I certainly won’t be getting it down here in my lifetime, if the bought-and-paid-for Dems have anything to say about it! In fact, I’d be willing to trade you guys me for say…Kathy Shaidle or Mark Steyn…

  8. 8 JJ Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at 9:25 pm

JAB – GLADLY! Well, Steyn might already be an American citizen — I can’t see how someone who goes into such orgasmic paroxysms about America could live down there and not become a citizen. Even David Frum got his citizenship a couple of years ago. As for Shaidle, yeah it would be nice to get rid of her even if we didn’t get the bonus of getting you. Unfortunately her fat ass is stuck in a chair which is apparently bolted to the floor.

Ha! Makes me want to sneak up behind her and yell out “Hey, Saint Ronnie the Red Ink Raygun! Here’s that mythical Cadillac-driving welfare queen you were talking about!”

😆 She doesn’t drive. Other than that, your description is apt.

JAB – We’d love to have you. Can’t say the current bunch that’s got hold of government power would be quick to let you in, though! Since they’ve been at the helm, the backlog of refugee claims waiting to be heard (isn’t that what you’d be? ;D ) has apparently tripled and people who promote progressive views get detained at the border and harassed on the streets.

Still. This is our country they’re hijacking. And we’d still love to have you.

(Sorry, I don’t know how to code my URLs to make them smaller or prettier.)

    She doesn’t drive.

What does her owner husband do it for her? I imagine she’d be very comfortable in Saudi Arabia, except for the fact that she’d be surrounded by *SHRIIIIIIIIIIIIEKKK!!!* MOOOSLIMS!!111!!!1!11!!!

    Stoopid is as Stupak does.

Glad the Man Who Sold Out Women got the sand kicked back in his own face.

Wait. What?
