Dumping WordPress

After 18 months or so on Weirdpress, I have come to believe it’s the teenage girl of blogging platforms:  pretty but flaky and given to emotional outbursts and fainting spells.

Oh well.  It wasn’t a bad experiment, it just didn’t work out so it’s time to move on.  Buy the ticket and all that.

I’ll most likely be going back to Blogspot, and probably give the blog a new name.  Posting will continue here intermittently while I mull over new setups, but this will also serve as a much needed respite from the frenzy of the blogosphere which has been getting on my nerves.

I will keep you informed of any developments… (now hopefully when I hit “Publish” this thing will actually show up on the front page…)

Your blog has always behaved well in public, so its fits and faints have only been seen by you.

Do NOT start anything else without telling us how to get there!

    Hi ellroon!

I know, it always behaves well for me until I log in… or TRY to log in.

I don’t know what they’ve been up to lately at WP, but it’s been doing a lot of irritating little things. ie., when I try to post a link, it refuses to take the copied url and I have to cancel, go back and re-copy the url, then try to post the link again. This has become standard operating procedure. And that’s just one thing, there are a lot of other little flaky things it’s doing (like not letting me log in sometimes).

Also there’s the “can’t modify the HTML” thing, which has always irritated me.

Blogspot has its kinks as well, but at least I can play with the html to my heart’s content, and that for me is a big selling point.

Don’t worry, I will give plenty of advance notice of where my diatribes can be found 😆

Is it possible that those emotional outbursts are the result of the WordPress hosting setup rather than the software itself? WordPress — as a package you download and install yourself — is the most popular blogging platform out there (and I say that as a disinterested party since my own blog is on Movable Type). I’m running a copy of WP myself in a corner where you can’t see it (it’s for experimental and educational purposes) and I haven’t seen any problems at all. The only WordPress-based site I can think of in recent memory that went wonky for a while was Firedoglake and that’s heavily customized.

Have a good break, JJ. 🙂

    Hi pogge –

I’m on the WP server. I haven’t seen any complaints from anyone else, so I have no idea… maybe wordpress doesn’t like me 😦

Whatever the reason, WP has just become too flaky. Tonight I’ve had to re-log in multiple times, even though it’s supposed to be saving my login info… then it tells me my login is wrong, and proceeds to log me in anyway. WTF? It just seems to be one goddamn thing after another.

FWIW: A few weeks ago I had weird problems with WP — I use Firefox. I switched over to IE — no problems. When I went back a couple to using Firefox a couple of days later the problem was cleared up. Now…fine. That has been the only problem I have had. I think the boys at Stageleft had WordPress problems.

SQ – I am trying to find a way to download an early version of FF — this latest one is way too buggy. Hopefully it helps…

I’ve had WP issues, greyed out comments that won’t post, a lot of spam.

The tech company attempted to fix the comments – readers are the life blood of BDBO but to no avail.

I like WP features though and will stick with it.

Wait. What?
