Dreams & Schemes & Circus Crowds: On Teh Newticles

I usually find it’s helpful to try and see things from both sides, from left and right, from up and down, from win and lose… and still somehow…

… I am utterly baffled and astonished by this:

Newt Gingrich pulled off a dramatic upset over Mitt Romney in the South Carolina Republican primary Saturday, reviving his own candidacy for the party’s presidential nomination and raising new doubts about that of his suddenly weakened rival.

Mr. Gingrich captured 40 per cent of the vote, compared to 28 per cent for Mr. Romney. Rick Santorum and Ron Paul trailed with 17 per cent and 13 per cent, respectively.

Does anyone have a rational explanation of how Values’ Votin’ South Carolinians(?) can look at this hypocrisy-oozing pusbag of amoral serial-marrying scum and fetid opportunistic malfeasance and think

“Yep, he’s our guy!”

Well, so far victories have gone to Romney, Santorum and Gingrich respectively.

Remember how I said, nobody reads Heinlein anymore? I meant it. “Never underestimate the power of human stupidity.”

Newt has been the one dogwhistling the loudest to the racists and S.C. is the heart of the Confederacy. I’m not saying this is the only reason, but it is one of them. That and the big time cash spent on highlighting Mittens’ history as a corporate raider. And sympathy for Newt being “picked on” by the big bad liberal media.
I’m only surprised to see that Stephen “Herman Caine” Colbert didn’t get more votes, since SC has an open primary and you don’t have to be a Republican to vote in the primary.

A long, drawn out GOP nomination battle is good, as it diverts resources away from the general election. Obama has been bad on a number of counts (like civil liberties), but the GOP would be far worse.

Daisy Deadhead speculated that it was due to Mittens being a Mormon.

Slippery amphibian creature is also an excellent debater.

I’m sure it was because Mitt is a Mormon. This vote was done way down in the bible-belt and the Newtster was smart enough (?) to say, just before heading south, that he has seen the error of his ways and will never cheat on the current Mrs. Gingrich again. (until he does.)

What really boggles me is that they applaud him for being so defiant about questions regarding his past.
Frankly, I agree that such personal issues are nobody’s business and shouldn’t have a bearing on how someone is chosen to run for public office. But I’m not a Values-Votin Republican.

I think you’re right. Newt’s dog whistles aren’t whistles, they’re sirens complete with flashing red lights.

Yeah, much as the Fundies hate Catholics, they hate Mormons even more. Mitt’s had an ongoing problem getting people to get excited about him, or even like him a little, and part of it is the Mormon thing. The other part is because he’s such a transparent slimeball and hypocrite, nobody knows where he really stands on anything.
Except Wall Street: they like him. $$$

  8. 8 JJ Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 12:07 pm

Agreed. Fundies are such a big part of the republican base that a Mormon would always have trouble getting anywhere with them. It doesn’t help that he’s a blatantly flaming hypocrite.

That’s what makes it so, I’m sorry, stupid. Newt was up in arms about Bill Clinton’s marital indescretions, what on earth makes these values-votin’ trogledytes think that Newt won’t pull something similar? Ostensibly, these issues are supposed to matter to the GOP, or at least, that’s what they say. So this must mean that as much as they hate sin, adultery, homosexuality and abortion, they hate the media more?

Geeze. Everybody gripes about the media, but common….

For sure. Someone tweeted about Newt musing about picking up a hooker on the way to Florida, since South Carolina showed him that nobody gives a shit.

Wait. What?
