An American soldier in Afghanistan is captured by the Taliban. Of course everyone is rallying around this young man in the hope that he’ll be recovered in good condition from his captors, especially the flag-sucking Fox News and guest Ralph Peters, who with outstanding support-the-troopsitude, declared:
Now look, Julie, I want to be clear. If, when the facts are in, we find out that through some convoluted chain of events, he really was captured by the Taliban, I’m with him. But, if he walked away from his post and his buddies at wartime… I don’t care how hard it sounds, as far as I’m concerned, the Taliban can save us a lot of legal hassles and legal bills.
Think your eardrums would survive the long and sustained roar of relentless outrage if someone on CNN or NBC had said that?
UPDATE: For something with a lot more substance than I could provide, here’s an excellent post from Boris at TGB.
huh? And where the hell did this idjit Peters think this soldier ‘walk off’ to?
dBO – Supposedly there’s some question as to whether he might have been trying to desert, but his family disputes it. And anyway, who cares — he’s still an American soldier who’s been captured by the enemy and getting him back should be Job 1, end of story. This Peters guy is despicable, and flag-waving Fox News should have called him out on it.
Somehow I get the feeling that Fox News didn’t call him on it because they think that if Col. Peters’ meme that he’s a deserter (with the implication that it’s because Obama is an illegitimate black male) goes viral, it’ll make Obama look bad. A second shot at creating “Obama’s Waterloo,” if you will.
Thus proving once again (as if it needed to be stated) that for the GOP and their propaganda arm Fux “News,” it’s party first, second, third, fourth, and fifth, country sixth…if that.
The man is clearly a loon of the first and worst order. At TGB I’ve linked to one article where Peters’ describes that he was allowed to enlist because the army was so desperate at the time – curved spine, flat feet and asthma.
The idea that one would attempt to desert in Afghanistan is absurd – a bit like leaving a 747 in midflight. It suggests a mental issue more than anything else.
JAB – Interesting. So they’re willing to spit on a soldier who’s over there in action, just to get something that they think might look bad for Obama. Despicable.
Boris – Just read your post, great stuff! As you say, even if it’s true that he wandered off, attempting such a thing would probably indicate mental issues. (And at this point the guy’s situation is still a pretty big “if”.)
ETA – I’m in the midst of reading that article all the way through (on another tab) — sick stuff! This Peters guy is a rotten fascist scumbag.
