Religious Right: “Stop calling us the Religious Right!”

As if the Religious Right doesn’t already make enough ridiculouscross-liberty demands, their latest bitch is that they don’t want to be called “the Religious Right”:

Several politically conservative evangelicals said in interviews that they do not want to be identified with the “Religious Right,” “Christian Right,” “Moral Majority,” or other phrases still thrown around in journalism and academia.

“There is an ongoing battle for the vocabulary of our debate,” said Gary Bauer, president of American Values. “It amazes me how often in public discourse really pejorative phrases are used, like the ‘American Taliban,’ ‘fundamentalists,’ ‘Christian fascists,’ and ‘extreme Religious Right.’ “

Jerry Falwell, cofounder of the Moral Majority, self-applied the Religious Right label until it started taking a more negative connotation, according to John Green, senior fellow at the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life.

Who’da thunk it?  For some reason it doesn’t occur to these nitwits that the reason the term “Religious Right” has so many negative connotations is because of — get ready for it — are you sitting down? — the Religious Right.

Call it a rose if you want, but a skunk cabbage is still a stinky old skunk cabbage.

It’s totally coherent with their assumption that their religious right shit doesn’t stink.

    Great picture!

This is of a piece with the fetus fetishists ‘rebranding’ themselves a la Signal Hill/BC Prolife.

And a Crisis Pregancy Center that would prefer ‘anti-abortion center’.

“‘People associated it [the term, “religious right”] with a hard-edge politics and intolerance. Very few people to whom that term now would apply would use that term.'”

That’s because their politics are hard-edged and intolerant, and they don’t like being seen and described as hard-edged and intolerant!

I can certainly think of a lot of other things I could call them.

As long as they insist on calling people like me rapists, child molestors, sodomisers, faggots, perverts… I could go on for a loooong time, they have used every negative term in the book.

They should count their blessings that we only call them the “religious right”.

I’ve always thought of them as non-religious anti-spiritual outspoken moralists, but whatever.

I wonder if they’d prefer “theocratic sphincters?”

  7. 7 JJ Friday, February 13, 2009 at 6:26 pm

deBeauxOs – “Coherent” is not the first word that springs to mind when I think of these people 😉

  8. 8 JJ Friday, February 13, 2009 at 6:28 pm

fern hill – Exactly, it’s re-branding again. Once they stink up one label, they have to apply a new one el pronto. The CPCs are a perfect example.

Gee, think they might clue in to the fact that nobody likes them because they’re fascist assholes?

  9. 9 JJ Friday, February 13, 2009 at 6:31 pm

Chimera – It’s hilarious how suddenly it’s the NAME that’s causing all the trouble, not the people who’ve tainted it. Can they be any more dumb and shallow?

    Bruce

They should count their blessings that we only call them the “religious right”.

Yeah, come to think of it, that’s one of the most innocuous names I have for them 😉

That’s very civilized of you. I prefer “fascist assholes”, myself.

    MoS

I wonder if they’d prefer “theocratic sphincters?”

😆 Not bad, not bad at all. How about theofascist sphincters? Gotta work “fascist” in there somehow.

“Baby-faced boy Alfie Patten is father at 13” Wonder what they make of that.

  14. 14 Gigi Friday, February 13, 2009 at 7:31 pm

And, oh yeah, can we officially call them “the Religious Wrong” now?

  15. 15 calgal Friday, February 13, 2009 at 7:40 pm

With all their talk about the unborn, I would like to rebrand the religious right as the undead, or predead if you prefer.

  16. 16 JJ Friday, February 13, 2009 at 7:47 pm

Gigi – Ugh, that story is so gross. That little kid — wtf?? Bizarre.

“Religious Wrong” 😆 Works for me.

  17. 17 JJ Friday, February 13, 2009 at 7:48 pm

calgal – Undead fascist assholes! Yes!

  18. 18 Phatbiker Friday, February 13, 2009 at 9:59 pm

    Bible zombies
    Jesus junkies
    Scripture monkeys
    Good-book goofs
The holy mother fuckers or The holy mother mother-fuckers
    Dominionist dimwits

  19. 19 J. A. Baker Friday, February 13, 2009 at 10:41 pm

I’ve always been partial to the term “Dominionists,” myself. After all, it’s how some of them refer to themselves, and accurately defines what they want to do to the country. (Although in that latter sense, “Mind Rapists” might be more apropos.)

    My other favorite: “Religious Reich”.

I’d also accept Christofascist, Bible Nazi, La Cosa Cristi, The New Honored Society, The Eric Rudolph Fan Club or MEN™®© of Respect.

    Or maybe even “Richard Nixon.”

I sometimes use KKKristian. Separates them from Christians.
