Family Research Council onside with Iran

shriek-copyThe social conservative spincases at the “Family Research Council” have flipped their lids over the US government’s decision to endorse a UN declaration on Human Rights, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity. SHRIEEEK!:

Adding to the long list of Bush positions that are now history, the Associated Press reports that the Obama administration will reverse Bush’s policy and endorse a nonbinding U.N. declaration to “protect” homosexuals. The document was first presented at the General Assembly last December, when the U.S. joining several African and Arab nations refused to sign.

The FRC’s article goes on to abuse “scare quotes” with reckless abandon as it describes how the evil and odious declaration condemns “violence” and “harassment” and “stigmatization and prejudice” due to “sexual orientation”. (Must be a “bitch” typing like “that” with “quotation marks” every other “word”.)

Okay, hands up everyone who’s surprised that on a human rights issue, the fundamentalist screwheads at the FRC would take sides with shit holes like Iran, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Syria and Pakistan…

Oh come on, there must be someone

Not wanting to rewrite you, but wouldn’t it be better to say they’re abusing scare quotes with gay abandon? Or “gay” “abandon”?

Frankly, I’m not surprised. They’ve done this before. Lots and lots of times before…

psa – No no no!!! “Family Research” is about “defending” the “family” — not sure from “what”, though!

JAB – Thanks for the links, interesting stuff. I should be able to use them at some point 😆 Yes, it should come as no surprise to anyone that once again, fundies stick together. Thus it has always been.

This is happening when Nigeria is about to criminalize gay marriage – and not like in California. Pretty much any two same sex people who live under the same roof face a 3 year jail sentence.

In addition to defining two gay people cohabiting as a “gay marriage,” the proposed law also provides a five-year prison penalty for anyone who “witnesses, abet[s] and aids the solemnization” of a ceremony in which a same-sex couple profess their devotion and commitment, the BBC reported.

EDGE Boston: Nigerian Bill Defines Gay Roommates as “Married,” Inflicts Prison Penalty

There is active support from the Anglican and Roman Catholic Archbishops in Nigeria (though they are being condemned by Anglican bishops, clergy and laity in other parts of the world), and not a protest from the religious right.

I am convinced that this is exactly what the FRC, FotF and AFA want in the U.S. and Canada, ultimately.

toujoursdan – Thanks for the link — what a bizarre story! Two gay people just living together as roomies can be defined as “married” and then thrown in jail? Totally bizarre.

It’s strange in a way, because it acknowledges that there actually is such a thing as SSM, something most fundies won’t do (thus the “scare quotes” around the word “marriage” all the time), although just for odious purposes. If this was happening in a democratic nation, that would be a legal foot in the door, would it not?

You’re right though — this is exactly what the FRC et al would do. I saw an interview with Richard Land *spit* a few years ago, and he was quite upfront about his opinion that even homosexuality should be made illegal.

As far as this part of the world has advanced on this issue, there’s still a ways to go.
