Seeing double (standards)

The manufacturer of Gardisil, the HPV vaccine for girls, is trying to get approval for a corresponding HPV vaccine for guys. Oddly, debate about the “male” vaccine has shifted away from its supposed potential for encouraging promiscuity and focused on grimy dollars and cents:

When a vaccine designed to protect girls against a sexually transmitted virus arrived three years ago, the debate centered on one question: Would the shots make young girls more likely to have sex?

Now the vaccine’s maker is trying to get approval to sell the vaccine for boys, and the debate is focusing on something else entirely: Is it worth the money, and is it safe and effective enough?

There seems to be a bit of a howling, shrieking double standard in play here, but I’d expect nothing less.

Of course there is. There’s always a double standard at work whenever the subject of women committing the crime of having t3h s3xx0rz comes up. It’s how these theocratic thugs roll.

That said, I feel compelled to mention my favorite philosopher’s thoughts on double standards:

All right, let’s not have a double standard here, one standard will do just fine.

There is the matter of HPV in uncircumcised males.

It was a topic on last night’s National on CBC TV.

    This link can help:http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=HPV+uncircumcised+males&meta=

Nobody is interested in focusing on whether or not boys are gonna have sex. Of course boys are gonna have sex! And if they can’t persuade girls into having it with them, they’ll have it with anything that’s handy — a sock, a banana peel (remember that scene in Weeds?), the dog, a picnic table… 😉

    These people are truly insane.

There’s that. But they also really despise women, there can’t be any doubt.

Yes, 20% of them carry the HPV virus — amazing. All the more reason for both boys and girls to get the vaccine.

That seems to be the prevailing sentiment… always has been. Girls are supposed to be pure and save themselves for marriage. Boys? Meh. It makes you wonder: if girls are supposed to be pure, and guys not so much, who are the guys having sex with?

Oh, socks. Right. Socks appeal! 😛

People apparently get pretty creative when they’re lonely.

Oh, it’s not that JJ. I’m not lonely, I’m just naturally creative.

    a picnic table ???

I think Chimera was referring to the hole for the picnic table-sized umbrella… And yes, people have done that before.

  16. 16 JJ Thursday, March 26, 2009 at 7:48 pm

willy – Oh, I wasn’t saying YOU’re lonely, just that people who ARE lonely must get creative about finding holes to play with. Or whatever.

JAB – GAH! I could have lived out the rest of my live without knowing that and been quite happy 😉

Right you are, JAB, and thank you for finding the link! I knew I had seen it, I just wasn’t sure where…

There was a video of “teh Act” with the picnic table floating around somewhere.

News links here, but the video his neighbor took of him in the act seems to have disappeared.
