Tiller murder suspect found

Surprise surprise, he’s an extreme right-wing anti-choice nut who’s posted at Operation Rescue’s website:

According to the Associated Press, police have identified the man suspected of murdering abortion provider George Tiller as 51-year-old Scott Roeder of Merriam, Kansas. He is in custody but has not yet been charged with the crime. […]

Various Internet sleuths have discovered two comments Roeder left on Web message boards about Tiller. In one, posted to Operation Rescue’s Web site, he wrote:

Bleass (sic) everyone for attending and praying in May to bring justice to Tiller and the closing of his death camp.

Sometime soon, would it be feasible to organize as many people as possible to attend Tillers church (inside, not just outside) to have much more of a presence and possibly ask questions of the Pastor, Deacons, Elders and members while there? Doesn’t seem like it would hurt anything but bring more attention to Tiller.

Gee, I wonder if that has anything to do with this:

Bye bye, dickheads.

If there’s any justice, the FBI will seize and scrutinize every shred of paper and every deleted byte to determine Operation Rescue’s connection and possibly, support given to this “lone” shooter.

  2. 2 Dr. Prole Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 6:41 pm

If there’s any justice they’ll round up every known member of Operation Rescue and interrogate them to prevent the next attack.

  3. 3 JJ Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 6:44 pm

Yeah, shit, if I hadn’t been heading to work, after I posted I’d have spent the next hour on OR’s website — screen shot the whole goddamn thing, every article, every comment on their message board. I’m glad other people were on the same wavelength.

Now the site is down, but too late — their boy got pinched.

  4. 4 JJ Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 6:48 pm

Dr.Prole – Well, it is terrorism. I doubt if OR can be conclusively linked to it, even though it’s their rhetoric that made this happen. But there might be enough of a shakedown that the organization falls apart. I HOPE.

At least they will think twice before harassing any more abortion clinics… or will they? Maybe not — they’re fucking stupid on top of being batshit insane.

  5. 5 Dr. Prole Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 6:55 pm

JJ – he can be linked to OR. From the FP of Kos:

He was also an active member of Operation Rescue; in 2007 a “Scott Roeder” posted this on the Operation Rescue website (which has been down throughout the day, probably more as a result of increased traffic than any sense of collective shame):

“[May 19th, 2007 at 4:34 pm] Bleass everyone for attending and praying in May to bring justice to Tiller and the closing of his death camp. Sometime soon, would it be feasible to organize as many people as possible to attend Tillers church (inside, not just outside) to have much more of a presence and possibly ask questions of the Pastor, Deacons, Elders and members while there? Doesn’t seem like it would hurt anything but bring more attention to Tiller.”

The Lawrence Journal-World and News relays that Kansas City station KMBC reported a post-it note with a phone number for Operation Rescue in his car at the time of his arrest.

So a bombmaker, tax protester, member of the “sovereignity” movement, anti-abortion zealot and Operation Rescue member: the arrested suspect manages to fit every stereotype of right-wing militia teabagger.

That’s all I got for today. I’m too pissed off for words.

  6. 6 Reality Bites Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 6:56 pm

Why would they think twice? What happened today makes them very happy.

The “pro-life” credo is “It’s only murder if it happens to a fetus.”

  7. 7 JJ Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 7:11 pm

Dr.Prole – You must be as upset as I am, I posted that comment in my post. I know, I know. I’m kind in shock too, almost to tears, actually. Of rage.

By “linked to OR” I mean from a legal POV — clearly the perp was driven by the rhetoric OR purveys on an ongoing basis, but whether there’s a legal precedent for this to be the crime of counselling to commit murder is another story. So OR’s culpability is questionable from a legal standpoint, though not, obviously, from a logical standpoint.

  8. 8 JJ Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 7:14 pm

    RB

Why would they think twice? What happened today makes them very happy.

I’m sure it does, although I’m just as sure that some of them aren’t happy about it for the reason that it will probably set back the anti-choice movement at least 20 years.

Watch for that to be the next meme — pro choicers did it to discredit the anti-choice movement.

Oh wait — they found the guy and he’s a fetus fetishist. Ooops!

  9. 9 fern hill Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 7:19 pm

They were suggesting that it was a pro-choicer at FD, JJ.

You said it best: ‘they’re fucking stupid on top of being batshit insane.’

  10. 10 Dr. Prole Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 7:39 pm

JJ, re OR’s culpability, too bad they will refuse to apply the same criteria to the members of OR and the organization itself that the Bushies did to the detainees at Guantanamo Bay and Al Qaeda. It’s different when the terrorists are white and Christian, I guess. I say round them all up and make ’em talk. Torture them by cranking an ipod playlist of Slayer, KISS, and Ani DiFranco.

Good news via Kos, AG Holder is assigning US Marshals to protect clinics and doctors. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/5/31/737358/-Holder-Dispatches-US-Marshalls-to-Protect-ClinicsDoctors

  11. 11 JJ Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 7:57 pm

fern hill – Oh, I’ve got that thread open in another tab. Have only waded through a few pages of it… some of them are so fucking stupid it makes my head hurt.

They can say whatever they want — far as I know, Operation Rescue isn’t a pro-choice organization and that seems to be who this fuckwad’s affiliated with.

  12. 12 JJ Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 8:02 pm

Dr Prole – Good point re Bush/Guantanamo. You’re right, it is different when the suspect is a white christian. Remember that torture poll? I wondered about that at the time, and I think the example I used was an abortion clinic shooter.

Did I read somewhere that this guy had planned MORE killings? I forget where I saw that.

That’s GREAT news about the marshalls. It’s about fucking time. And it’ll be a good reminder to anyone passing by… this is what “pro-life” means: clinics need armed guards.

  13. 13 JJ Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 8:06 pm

fern hill – OMFG, I just got to the “this is a pro-choice murder” part. Fer fuck sake, are these people on fucking drugs??

  14. 14 fern hill Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 8:13 pm

Prolly not. Just religious nutbar derangement syndrome. It would be sad if it weren’t SO FUCKING SCARY.

  15. 15 Reality Bites Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 8:28 pm

I wonder, if they had their “massive” march on Ottawa now, how many MPs would be willing to be seen with them?

One could have some respect for their point of view if any of them were in other ways decent human beings. But they aren’t.

Funny how the murderer fled. Shouldn’t he have proudly stood his ground?

  16. 16 Bene D Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 8:34 pm

I can’t access Operation Rescue either, however I did manage to get to Operation Rescue/Operation Save America.

They are calling The Reform Luthern Church apostates and more.
Thier opps we don’t condone murder disclaimer is at the end of their blame the victims rant.

I also found The Army of God openly rejoicing.

I hope the FBI and the Kansas State Police tear these sites apart, along with Missionaries to the Pre-born and a few of the other Operation Rescue buddies.

  17. 17 JJ Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 8:39 pm

fern hill – True enough. There is no drug potent enough to induce that combination of frenzied stupidity and venomous derangement. People like that are why I’m armed.

  18. 18 fern hill Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 8:48 pm

All kidding aside, I have always been anti-gun. (Despite, in a couple of youthful experiments, finding that I’m pretty good at shooting. In Arizona, shooting beer bottles and whatnot, I had a thought: ‘This would be more interesting if the beer bottles moved’. Then I put the gun down. Forever.) This shit has me rethinking.

Either the culture so-called war is going to go on hold for a while after this, or it’s gonna escalate. I dunno.

  19. 19 JJ Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 8:55 pm

RB – This murder won’t help their “cause”, and may in fact do irreparable damage in terms of their voice and political influence (which already isn’t much). They’ll still have their marches, and there’ll always be a Cheryl Gallant willing to show up and rave, but if they thought they weren’t getting any attention before… things are about to go seriously to the bad for the anti-choice, uh, “movement”.

They have been unmasked as the haters they are: pro-choice activists know it, gays & lesbians know it, now everyone will know it.

Funny how the murderer fled. Shouldn’t he have proudly stood his ground?

Heh. Just like the way the rest of them are all trying to run far away from this thing.

  20. 20 JJ Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 9:07 pm

BeneD – I just visited the Army of God and took a screenshot — not that there’s any chance they’d ditch it, they’re proud haters, but it’ll be featured in an upcoming post on “the angry, angry right”.

Operation Rescue’s site was functional this morning but by the time I got home I was getting a 403 error and now it looks like the site has crashed. Either from too much traffic, or because someone searched the message boards and found some posts by the alleged killer, so they want to make sure any evidence is scrubbed. I hope the FBI tears it apart, and I hope some of them are arrested as co-conspirators.

The truth is, anyone who engaged in disseminating the propaganda, the hateful rhetoric or the harassment of Dr.Tiller is morally, if not legally, culpable in his murder. They made it happen.

  21. 21 JJ Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 9:14 pm

fern hill – That’s always been an area where I’ve parted ways with most in this corner of the political spectrum. My feeling is that I don’t want to have to rely on anyone for protection, I want to be able to protect myself. Because protection might not be there when I need it (especially out here, where it takes the cops 3/4 of an hour to get here). Also, I don’t like the idea of the government being the only ones who have guns — it smacks of a submissive populace under the boot of armed authoritarians, and I want no part of it.

You don’t have to be a gun nut to appreciate the benefits of being prepared to self-defend. Plus then you get to say “bring it on” and really mean it 😛

  22. 22 J. A. Baker Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 9:29 pm

NOW can we throw the book at OR and Randall “Hate is good. Our goal is a Christian nation” Terry?

  23. 23 JJ Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 10:31 pm

JAB – Ya think? I would soooooo love that.
